President's Message January 2022

I would like to thank our Board Members for their work organizing our
events in 2021. Because of the viruses we had to limit our activities.

Steve Collins organized our Atascadero High School senior scholarships again this year. He lined up the Potluck Picnic in the Lake Park which we all enjoyed.

Carol Russell worked with Zóe Arkfeld, owner of The ARTery, on our “Brush,
Needle, Camera, Kiln” membership show. She also worked with KIWANIS and The ARTery on our, “Art Supplies for Children of Needy Families,” project
in December.

Gary Hix our illustrious Treasurer, besides his usual jobs, created
our fine new website: atascaderoart.org

Our V.P. Kathy Miller publicizes our events with fine articles in this time of few news outlets.

Liz Horton is our Newsletter editor, putting out a topnotch edition every month featuring our members.

Liz and our Secretary Kathie Asdel organized our Holiday Salad &
Dessert Potluck Luncheon at the Atascadero United Methodist Church. It was a success with lots of good food.
And I try to help when I can.

It looks like in 2022 we will still be working with the viruses. As soon as we can we will start in-person demonstrations. We plan to do a reprise of our successful events from 2021.

Our dues are due in January. Please use the envelop mailed to
you, or download a form from our website. Your dues pay for all our events.

Keep making art and making the world a better place.

Our Featured Artist for January 2022 is Gary Hix.  Enjoy.......
 â€śSelf Portrait”
From the desk of Gary Hix,

I was born and raised in the California Central Valley and when I left to go to college I never wanted to move back.  After finishing my B.S. at Cal poly I worked as an electrical engineer until our daughter was born at which time I became an at-home dad.

My first experience in art was in drawing and watercolor classes from Tricia Reichert around 2006.  I saw I needed a lot of help here.  When I turned 50 I found the emeritus program at Cuesta College where Joy Krull taught drawing and painting in all mediums.  I continued I her watercolor classes for ten years with some drawing mixed in.  Then a few years ago I switched to her acrylics class and new possibilities opened up.

When Joy stopped teaching this year my wife, Barbara Lynch, took all the ideas, projects etc. from her classes over the years and placed them on cards.  Now when I need an idea for a project I draw 3 cards and go from there.

I still enjoy mixing up mediums and styles.  I find that each new project is a learning experience which can often be applied in other mediums.  The examples here show watercolor, acrylic and scratchboard and styles including chiaroscuro and trompe l'oeil.

I had taken a stained glass class from Marilyn Hoerl some years ago through Cuesta Community Programs and since I like working with wood I put them together to make hardwood and stained glass boxes.

Since 2018 I have been the treasurer of the Atascadero Art Association and since summer 2021 the "web master" of the association's web site atascaderoart.org.

Atascadero Art Association donates art supplies for Toys for Tots

donation art supplies

All donations stay in the local area

– This year the Atascadero Art Association has again purchased art kits and supplies to donate to Toys for Tots for children and teens of needy local families. The association purchased the art kits from a local retailer. Also many people donated additional supplies. Members and family had a photo op with the supplies outside The Artery where the supplies were to be picked up.

Members from the Kiwanis were there to receive the donations. Atascadero Kiwanis started Toys for Tots about 40 years ago. They started by providing used toys with the Christmas food give away at St. Williams Catholic Church. Four years later, the toys went from used toys to new toys – one for each child.art supply donation

For the last 20 or so years, Toys for Tots has combined with Coats for Kids and Loaves & Fishes at the Atascadero Armory for the Christmas giveaway. Toys for Tots collects and has available over 6.000 toys, books, and art supplies for distribution each year. All donations stay in the local area.
