Our upcoming event in April will be a presentation by Virginia Mack on Color and Light.  Virginia is a member artist at Gallery at Marina Square in Morro Bay and works mainly in Watercolor and mixed media.  She has taught art at Cuesta and other places in the area.  She is a colorist and is interested in the interplay of light and color in nature.  Her work is usually of nature in and around Morro Bay.

What:   Color and Light with Virginia Mack
When:  Friday, April 19th at 2:30 p.m.
Where:   Atascadero Public Library – Martin Polin room (upstairs/up elevator)

If you know an artist who would be interested in doing a demonstration, please have them contact the Art Association Board at AtasArtAssn@gmail.com.  Your participation will help to make our demonstration program more successful.

Patricia Newton demonstrated how to get going on a seascape to capture the movement and translucence of the water, adding froth and foam to finish it off.  She also shared some tips, things she has learned over her many years of doing these paintings. We were able to use the Art Associations projector to get her work visible on the big screen. She worked with a limited palette, but lots of mixes to produce the gradations of color. She primarily uses linseed oil for thinning and discussed touch up varnishing which can be used to protect a painting until it is ready for final varnish.  She also discussed revitalizing a painting the seems to be dulling as it dried.  A great demonstration and shared insights.  The red value finder, similar to what she showed us, is available on-line from various suppliers.

And after some finishing touches back at her studio…

In honor of our recent demonstration, the inspiration of the month will be Seascapes. Challenge yourself by using a different medium than you usually use…perhaps oil and acrylic painters could try watercolor, and watercolor painters collage, or… you fill it in. You may find you have an undiscovered talent.

Remember, no need to stick too close to the idea.  Just let it roll around in your head for a bit and see what pops out.  Feel free to send a photo of whatever you do from these prompts through our email address, and it will be posted on the website for others enjoy.

An Artist Connection meeting is planned for May to prepare for the upcoming show and the Fair.  Bring work you have completed or are working on to share with others, and IF YOU WANT, request suggestions or ideas to finalize your work.

The artists’ reception on the 2nd was well attended. Snacks were served and art was hung and all made merry.

There is a lot that can go into framing a picture as Zoé demonstrates.

You will notice there are no bandages!
